Maldivian launches seasonal Male (MLE) - Melbourne (MEL) service in Q2
Maldivian has officially inaugurated its seasonal service between Male and Melbourne, adding a notable new air link between the Indian Ocean and Australia. The new route is designed not only to serve premium leisure, visiting-friends-and-relatives, and holiday demand, but also to mark a further step in the airline’s ambition to expand its international footprint.
The introduction of this nonstop service shortens travel time between the Maldives’ tourism capital and one of Australia’s most dynamic metropolitan centers, offering a clear advantage in both journey time and passenger experience over connecting itineraries. It represents a strategic milestone for Maldivian as it positions itself to capture two-way traffic flows: from Australia to the Maldives’ world-renowned island resorts, and from the Maldives to a major Asia-Pacific hub for business, education, and culture. As long-haul travel demand continues to recover, this seasonal route strengthens connectivity between two high-spending markets with strong growth potential.
The route is operated once weekly with an Airbus A330-200. The use of a widebody aircraft underscores Maldivian’s focus on the long-haul leisure segment while ensuring stable capacity during the seasonal peak period.
Male serves as the gateway to the Maldives’ signature coral-island landscape, where sea and sky appear to merge into a single expanse of blue. From the capital, travelers can easily access secluded resorts, dive sites rich in vibrant marine life, and a uniquely relaxed coastal lifestyle. Though compact in size, the city offers a lively atmosphere shaped by its fish market, harbor, mosques, and the ever-present rhythm of the ocean.
Melbourne stands out for its blend of European elegance and distinctly Australian creativity. The city is known for its street art, coffee culture, tree-lined boulevards, and year-round sporting calendar. From Melbourne, travelers can also combine their trip with visits to the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites at Riversleigh and Naracoorte, a UNESCO World Heritage property recognized for preserving exceptionally valuable evidence of the evolution of Australia’s mammalian fauna.
