Serious Incident
CategoryEngine Problem
Flight PhaseClimb
Affected AltitudeFL140
Technical Issue Details
An ATR 72-500 (TN-AKA) experienced an engine fire warning for the left engine (No. 1) while climbing through flight level 140.
The flight was operating from Brazzaville (BZV) to Pointe Noire (PNR).
Outcome / Handling
The flight crew performed the engine fire checklist and shut down the affected left engine.
The aircraft continued to Pointe Noire on the remaining engine and landed safely.
No injuries were reported among the 73 passengers and 6 crew members on board.
Current Status
The final investigation report determined that the engine shutdown was caused by fuel starvation, with no actual fire occurring.
A prolonged, uncorrected sideslip during autopilot flight caused a 5-degree roll, which disrupted fuel transfer to the engine's feeder tank.
Contributing factors included unmonitored autopilot Vertical Speed (VS) mode causing speed decay, failure to correct the yaw indicator, poor crew coordination, cockpit distractions from unauthorized personnel, and undetected corrosion in the yaw damper.
