Technical Issue Details
The Boeing 737-8Q8 (OK-TVJ), operated by Smartwings on behalf of Camair-Co, was performing flight QC222 from Yaoundé (NSI) to Garoua (GOU).
Shortly after takeoff during the initial climb from Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport, the aircraft suffered a bird strike.
Outcome / Handling
Upon hearing an abnormal noise following the impact, the flight crew elected to abort the journey to Garoua as a safety precaution.
The aircraft was diverted to Douala International Airport (DLA), where it landed safely.
No passenger or crew injuries were reported.
Current Status
The aircraft was grounded in Douala to undergo technical checks and damage assessment.
Douala Airport was selected for diversion because Garoua Airport lacked the required technical equipment and personnel to inspect the aircraft after a bird strike.
